Zakynthos (Greek: Ζάκυνθος [ˈzacinθos] or Zante (/ˈzɑːnti, -teɪ, ˈzæn-/; from Venetian)
A Greek island in the Ionian Sea, and the third largest among the islands of the Ionian archipelago. Its area covers 408 km2, and the population consists of roughly 40 thousand permanent residents. The culture and architecture of Zakynthos has been affected by its rich historical heritage. In the long history of the Island it has been ruled by Turks, British, French and Italians. The name of the island has been noted by Homer himself in his writings. According to legend, the island was named in honor of Zeus’s grandson – Zakynthos. Moreover, in Greek mythology, the island was a favorite hunting spot for goddess Artemis. West coast of Zakynthos consists of steep cliffs and steep hills, while to the East the island is mostly flat and plain. Here is found a great number of rare species of flora and fauna. The South of the island is inhabited by giant sea turtles Kareta-Kareta, and these unique creatures can be admired by everyone. Beach season in Zakynthos begins from as early as may – at that time of year the water nearest its shores is warmed up to a comfortable 19-20 0C, and is kept at a level of 26 0C up to the end of October. Summer in Zakynthos is not as hot as, for instance, on Crete. Heat is fairly bearable here due to the presence of lush vegetation, and the temperature does not rise above 38 0C even during the hottest days of summer.
